Cai's Guyana Dictionary
Perhaps you know that Guyana is the only English-speaking country in South America. English is the official language, but Creolese is the language of the people. It's like they speak English, but you just can't tell what they are saying. It takes a while to understand. Anyways, here are some real life expressions (spelled as I hear them)... From Cai's Dictionary
Close dat cah gate der bai, dem picknee lef it open.
Close the cardoor boy, the children left it open.
Me mash up dah crappo.
I smashed the frog (with a hammer)
Ten nuff picknee der mahn.
Ten children is a lot.
Wah appen der?
What's happening? (greeting)
balanjee
eggplant
bellna
rolling pin
lashes
spanking
Me no know who fer work wit.
I don't know who to work with.
Yo daddy dah home bai?
Is your father home?
Go call he nah!
Go call him quickly.
one one time
once in while
